PORTFOLIO: Best Practice Guides
My Solution: I created a series of best practice guides, or how-to manuals, that could be used as is or customized to meet the unique needs of a particular school district. Each guide explains how to perform a particular procedural task, beginning with tasks that must be carried out at the beginning of the school year and ending with tasks to be performed at the end of the year. Each task is broken down into clearly defined steps.
To further assist teachers, links to necessary documentation forms and other resources are embedded in the guides. The guides’ friendly, straightforward tone counter the formal, often intimidating writing found in regulatory statements.
The Challenge: State and federal regulations governing the administration of bilingual and ESL programs in public K-12 schools are lengthy and complex. Despite receiving training, teachers and administrators had difficulty remembering procedural details when it came time to implement them. They needed how-to guides that could be accessed during meetings.
